tat-abhāvāt-saṃyoga-abhāvaḥ hānaṃ tat-dṛśeḥ kaivalyam
तदभाबात्संयोगाभावो हानं तद्दृशेः कैवल्यम्
That non-appearance is the non-appearance of the conjunction, that giving up is the seer in its abstraction.
tat - that, this
abhāva - non-appearance, non-existence, absence
saṃyoga - conjunction
hāna - the act of abandoning, relinquishing, giving up, escaping, getting rid of; gone or departed; cessation
dṛś - to see
kaivalya - independence, freedom, solitude, separateness, abstraction, not connected with anything else; uncompounded, unmingled
Commentary by T Krishnamacharya:
“Avidyā and Freedom do not exist together. Here Avidyā represents both the basis and attitude towards our action. The aim of Yoga is to reach that state where our actions are not based on Avidyā.”
